2 Delays…

Well, I didn't get to sail Salamba much. As you've probably seen, I haven't updated this site for a while. This is because after sailing Salamba for a few times, I hurt myself in the foot and couldn't get on the boat again, of course. As winter is now setting in, and I can barely walk, I don't think there'll be any more testing for a while... But, I was quite happy with the performance of the boat, and no major modifications will be necessary.

Almost sailing !

Everything was ready for Salamba's first sail this weekend. We had a trailer, sail battens, trampoline, etc... The week before had been absolutely great and we felt that Saturday would be a good day. The wind was looking a bit on the strong side but we wanted to give it a go anyway But, after loading up the trailer and going to the beach, there was at least a force four blowing, possibly five, the windsurfers were there, so we chickened out... There should be an anticyclon on britanny on wednesday or thursday, so we'll try again at that moment.

Everything ready

I received the trampoline a few days ago and the sail is finished! That means we can go sailing quite soon. the only thing missing now are the battens for the sail. They should be here in a few days, though. Can't wait to get on the water !

Salamba launched!

Mise a l'eau Mise a l'eau Mise a l'eauThat's finally it, Salamba was launched a few days ago as we had to verify its unsinkability. It passed fairly well, as you can see in the photos on the right. On the first, you can see that the unloaded proa floats well above the design waterline, meaning that there is no obvious excess weight. The second picture shows Salamba with three persons on board. The main hull sinks until the waterline, but the float stays where it was in the unloaded condition. This is because we hadn't received the trampoline yet and had to sit on the main hull itself. Finally, the third picture shows Salamba as it would be with holes all over and loaded with four people and 40 kgs of gear. As there are no seacocks, we had to fill the boat until the level of water inside and outside was the same. You can see that the amount of boat left above the water makes it possible to go home, or even keep sailing !

Hulls are painted

peinturepeinture Now the hulls are painted, including the deck grit. The rudders are in progress and I am also putting in place some gear such as cleats, etc... The rig is ready except for the sail.

Decking the hulls

Détails fixation pontPréparation du tissu I finished decking both hulls. The deck is fixed using an epoxy/silica mix, with pressure being given by nails through the deck stringers as can be seen on the left hand photo. The gunwale has then been reinforced by fiberglass bands, to give a higher strength and a better durability, particularly to impact. On the right hand photo, you can see the preparation of the fiber before stratification.

General view Here is a general view of Salamba. You can see the main hull and the float, joined by the beams. It also possible to see, barely, the foam in the end compartment. One hatch is in place as well.

Good progress

I made good progress so far. The main hull is almost finished, the deck in partly on, and I'm starting to put in the insubmersibility foam. The tubes that will hold the aluminium beams are now stratified in the main hull and the float, the fiber reinforcements at the chines are done as well.
